Org Charts—In SmartDraw 2008 they draw themselves!

With SmartDraw 2008 you no longer have to drag and drop symbols like you did before. Org Charts now draw themselves based on your instructions.

Add org chart elements with the click of your mouse and watch them automatically integrate into your chart. You can even build an entire org chart using keyboard shortcuts.

How it's done

As with every type of graphic, the first step in SmartDraw is to select the appropriate template. Here we choose org chart.

The template opens and on the left you find the org chart SmartPanel—your controls for automatic drawing.

The SmartPanel contains all of the essential commands you need to create a flowchart. SmartDraw 2008 has more 50 different SmartPanels, each designed specifically to create a particular type of graphic.

SmartDraw anticipates your needs. Note how the minimum requirements for an org chart—a manager and two subordinates—are already there ready for you to start. Through the SmartPanel you can add employees below, to the right, left or above. You can also add assistants and co-managers. Select the box that you want to add to and simply click "add employee below" to add it.

The new box appears below your selected box and is connected with a line. No dragging, dropping, connecting or aligning. SmartDraw does the drawing for you so you can focus on the relationships in your organization.

Adding another employee below is even easier. Just click the "add employee below" button again, or just hit the ENTER on your keyboard. With the keyboard shortcuts, you can add build your whole org chart by typing.

Adding text is a snap. Just double click the box you want to add text to, and then simply start typing. Want to add text to other boxes? Hit the tab key on your keyboard to jump to the next box, and just continue typing. Or hit the down arrow key to jump to the box below. You can fill in your entire org chart just like form—using tab and arrow keys to move from box to box.

The Format section of the SmartPanel allows you to totally rearrange and change the look of your chart with simple one-click commands. Change your chart direction from top-down to bottom-up or to left-to-right or even right-to-left. Click the button and your whole chart rearranges itself instantly while maintaining connections and perfect alignment.

The Format SmartPanel commands also allow you to change the style of one or all the boxes in your chart, change the look of one or all the connecting lines, and even add photos.
