Build PowerPoint® Presentations Directly from SmartDraw 2009.5

Published January 20 2009 8:45 AM | Aaron Stannard

Well, it’s that time of year—time for a major update to SmartDraw 2009. The biggest feature in this update is our improved storyboarding capability – if you’re a regular reader, you’re probably familiar with the benefits and practice of storyboarding presentations. In SmartDraw 2009.5, we made storyboarding even better—now you can literally build your entire PowerPoint® presentation from SmartDraw using our storyboarding SmartTemplates.

If you’d like a demonstration, feel free to watch the screencast below:

This SmartDraw screencast requires plug-ins enabled and the latest Adobe Flash Player installed.

Other New SD2009.5 Features:

In addition to the storyboarding, we’ve also made some other improvements to SmartDraw 2009:

  • Integration with Microsoft Project® - One feature that’s been requested for a long time is the ability to import and export Gantt charts (project charts) to and from Microsoft Project®. Well, all of you project managers out there have your wish. You can now import and export Gantt charts from SmartDraw 2009.5 to Microsoft Project®.
  • Import Chart and Graph Data Directly from Excel® Files – In the original release of SmartDraw 2009, you could only import Excel® data by copying it to the clipboard. In 2009.5, you can import data directly from Excel® files themselves, which is much easier. SmartDraw 2009.5 also accepts data import from .CSV and .TXT files if you used delimited data.

If you’re a SmartDraw 2009 owner then I highly recommend that you download the patch and try out these new features. If you have any feedback please feel free to use our contact form. I read all of the email from that form myself.

If you’re a SmartDraw 2009 owner (most blog readers are), you can download the 2009.5 patch right here.

If you don’t own SmartDraw 2009, you can upgrade existing versions of SmartDraw or try it for free.

You might need to update your flash player - the embed code that we use should help you do that automatically.

My favourite change is a small one: the SD window no longer overlaps my taskbar that is docked at the top of the screen. Gonna check out the PPT functionality now :)

Seems a great tool but interested in hearing more features.

I wonder how much it requires to upgrade SD 08, also my 08 is not producing the doucments in pdf :-( some error i guess.

I think there will be different design feature as well and yes much attractive then MS.

Cheers

Avish,

Can you report the errors you've experienced with SmartDraw 2008 to support?

I updated my adobe flash 10 before trying to run the video demo?  Still I didn't see any "video" only audio?

# Aaron Stannard said on January 23, 2009 1:49 PM:

Hey Harold,

It looks like this issue isn't related to Adobe Flash - we've had a number of readers report a similar "audio but no visual" issue. The IT team is looking into the cause - it's a recent problem that's only come up in the past couple of weeks.

Hello,

I prepared a ppt presentation using smartdraw storyboard, nice, exept that only titles appear on "diaporama" mode in ppt, no bulletpoints, no nothing else.

Stavros,

Could you contact SmartDraw support at support@smartdraw.com? We'll be able to provide you step by step help there.

If i insert a note on the push pins then export to powerpoint i lose the note, even on slide show its not there?

# Aaron Stannard said on April 29, 2009 10:14 AM:

Nevine,

The notes will display on your SmartDraw document but they do not export to PowerPoint. These notes are a SmartDraw-only feature.
