Types of Joints PLAIN JOINT PIVOT JOINT HINGE JOINT CONDYLOID JOINT SADDLE JOINT BALL AND SOCKET JOINT A plain joint allows bones to slide past each other. Midcarpal and midtarsal joints are plain joints. A pivot joint allows rotation around an axis. Pivot joints are found in the neck and forearm. A condyloid joint is similar to ball and socket but with less movement. The wrist is a condyloid joint. A hinge joint allows extension and retraction of an appendage. Hinge joints are found in the knees, elbows, fingers, and toes. A ball and socket joint allows for radial movement in almost any direction. Ball and socket joints are found in the shoulders and hips. A saddle joint allows movement back and fourth and up and down. The only saddle joint in a human body is the thumb.
