Text in this example:
Hiatal Hernia Hiatal hernia is the protrusion (hernia) of the upper part of the stomach into the thorax through a tear or weakness in the diaphragm.
Chronic acid reflux is sometimes remedied via surgery since it can severely injure the esophagus. Symptoms depend on the individual anatomy and surgical technique, but due to a statistical increase in complications and high discomfort levels, surgery is only recommended as a last alternative.
Two types of Hiatal Hernia:
1. The sliding hiatal hernia where the gastroesophageal junction moves above the diaphragm together with some of the stomach.
2. A part of the stomach herniates through the hiatus beside, and without movement of, the gastroesophageal junction. Below is a list of contributing factors which may result in hiatal hernia:
Frequent bending over or heavy lifting
Poor seated posture
Straining with constipation Symptoms & Causes
In most patients, there are no symptoms, however some experience heartburn and regurgitation. Besides discomfort from acid reflux and dysphagia, hiatal hernias may have severe consequences if not treated. LifeART Collection Images Copyright © 1989-2001 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Baltimore, MD
