Degrees of Burn
First Degree Burn
affects epidermis. Skin will be red, swollen, painful, and sensitive to touch and usually heals in 1 to 2 days. Mild sunburn is a common 1st degree burn.
Second Degree Burn
involves the epidermis and part of the dermis layer of skin. Skin will be painful, swollen, red, blistered, and/or be weepy/watery.
Third Degree Burn
destroys the epidermis and dermis and may also damage the underlying bones, muscles, and tendons. Skin will be black and white and charred. There is less pain because the nerves have been destroyed.
