SmartDraw Flowchart Tutorial

HOW TO DRAW FLOWCHARTS (cont'd)

Connecting Your Shapes with Lines
SmartDraw will automatically connect your flowchart shapes with lines as you add shapes to your work area.

Click on the Connect Shapes button

If you need to connect a shape to another shape that's already on the page, click on the Connect Shapes button in the SmartPanel and your cursor will change to a pencil. This indicates you can now draw a line to connect the two shapes.

Touch the pencil to the edge of one shape and click down with the mouse (you'll see black dots on the edge of the shape). Drag the pencil to the edge of another shape, and release when you see the Anchor Symbol.

Connect Line
Start drawing the line from the edge of the first shape

Anchor Line
And anchor the line to the edge of the second shape

The black dots are Connection Points.

Connected

These points mark the places where a shape can be attached to a line or another shape.

Once connected, lines and shapes stay connected, even if they are moved or stretched.

To detach a line you connected (not the automatic lines that probably make up most of your chart), click on it and drag one of its endpoints away from the shape.

Detach
Drag one of the endpoints of a line away from the shape to detach it

Line Types

Different Types of Lines
You can also connect your flowchart shapes with other types of lines. By default, the Connect Shapes command uses a Straight Line, but you can also choose: curved line, curved connector, and shape connector.
