What is an Emergency Exit Plan?

An emergency exit plan is a diagram that shows exits and exit routes for a building. Employers are usually the ones responsible for creating emergency exit plans for workplaces, often in compliance with regulations like those from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). You can create an emergency exit plan for a residence, an office, a warehouse, school, or a manufacturing facility.

Emergency exit plans are a core component of the an Emergency Response Plan (ERP). They cover:
  • Evacuation routes
  • Exits and stairwells
  • Assembly points
  • Use of fire extinguishers and alarms
  • Responsibilities of floor wardens, security, and safety teams
  • Accountability procedures (roll call, headcounts)
