How to Draw an Evacuation Plan

Step 1

Start with Your Floor Plan

You can draw the floor plan of your building from scratch or import an existing floor plan as a PDF or image. Unlike space planning floor plans, you don't need to add furniture to your drawing. Stick to walls, doors, windows, and key structural features.

Step 2

Identify Exits

Clearly identify all the exits and stairwells.

Step 3

Draw Escape Routes

Draw pathways using lines and arrows from rooms to the nearest exists. Include a secondary route in case the primary route is blocked.

Step 4

Add Fire Safety Equipment

Place symbols for fire safety equipment like fire extinguishers, first aid kids, and sprinkler shut offs where appropriate.

Step 5

Mark Hazards

Mark hazardous materials to avoid like chemical storage and locked rooms.

Step 6

Add Labels

Use a legend to clearly label your plan with "You are Here" markers and safe meeting points.

Step 7

Review and Share

Share your evacuation plan with your team to make sure to double-check accurate and to make sure it meets fire-safety standards.

Step 7

Export to Print

Export your emergency exit plan as a PDF for printing. You can also directly insert it into any Microsoft Office app like Microsoft Word® or PowerPoint®, or add it to Google Docs or Google Slides.
